Keeper of Lore

Opal Grainwind Chapter 2

Arrived in Coastend
my village home
the loot dragged on a sled.

My folk greeted me
and mourned the dead
heroes, still, in the wild.

Our whiskey returned
yet was it worth
so many good folk’s lives?

We’ll ponder this not
raiding is life
tradition shall prevail.

Coastend folk cried out,
“Opal Grainwind!
most fearsome of women!”

“Our ruler is dead
his heart has failed
King Wolfpeak is no more!”

“He has arisen
no longer dead
the Demon Plague claimed him!”

“Peerless he was
in life renowned
warrior with such strength.”

“We want to slay him,
return to death,
remove the demon curse.”

“The fighters we sent
have all been slain
now they are demons too.”

“You have much renown
your deeds are great
your might cannot be matched.”

“We beg you, Opal
put down the king
in his lighthouse stronghold.”

I entered the place
my sword in hand
and slew the three demons.

At lighthouse’s peak
I found my king
girt in thick plate armor.

We both bore long swords
The fight was close
no room for sword swinging.

I grasped my sword blade
closing the space
thrusting it like a spear.

Wolfpeak was bigger
though not cunning
I hooked him with my hilt.

I kicked at his knee,
pulled with my sword
and his size betrayed him.

He lost his balance
falling from high
dashed apart on the rocks.

On a pedestal
at lighthouse top
rested the Clement Orb.

This magic item
enabled farms
here in the frozen north.

‘Twas Wolfpeak’s treasure
this wondrous orb
along with chests of gold.

I claimed all the loot
and his kingship
now I would rule Coastend.
