Keeper of Lore

The Demon Plague Verses Chapter 5, Part 1

The words found on this tablet
more ancient than they knew
contained the lore that they sought
and revealed their next clue.

Tong read the odd text aloud.
They knew not what it meant.
To reveal the meaning his
and Keeper’s minds were bent.

They deciphered the tablet
and had news good and ill.
To save Soul Slicer were more
tasks for Billet and Vil.

The old words from the tablet
spoken plainly by Tong
are listed here, dear reader,
though not part of this song:

Unnatural chains bind a power of death and disrupt the natural order. The Hammer of Souls can break these chains and restore the natural order. The Hammer is not just made of metal, it also includes unpleasant ingredients. You need metal from a giant, a dear friend’s soul and the soul of a demon. Gather the souls with a Darkling Fomenter’s dagger. Melt the giant’s metal and the dagger to forge a hammer.

Tong had ideas to get
their new quest underway.
He laid out the tasks for them
to begin the next day.

Travel southwest to Twigstar,
a town of great renown.
Gail Twigstar is the ruler
that sits upon the throne.

In the town’s central market
is a metal statue.
‘Tis named the Learned Giant
This answers that one clue.

Learned Giant’s metal skin
is one required item.
For the other elements,
how do we acquire them?

Darkling Fomenters have knives
that can steal people’s souls.
To kill a person with one
would deal a death most cruel.

What dear friend would do this thing?
Sacrifice their own soul?
I could never ask someone
to pay this final toll.

Even a demon will not
be so easy to kill.
For though they’ve turned to evil
their souls are human still.

Vilerend and Billet asked them
what these Darklings could be.
Keeper of Lore then told them
a lengthy history.

“Darkling Fomenters
are legendary
creatures of nightmare.”

“Some few folks claim to
know someone that knows
someone that’s seen one.”

“I do not think that
any living folk
have seen a Darkling.”

“Darkling Fomenters
carry knives that can
capture human souls.”

“No one knows where a soul
goes after death when
a Darkling steals it.”

“But they will not be
woven into the
Heaven’s Tapestry.”

“Their reward in the
After World is lost
and they do suffer.”

“It is believed that
the Darklings feed souls
to the Lord of Feasts.”

“He is also the
Lord of Terrors, bound
in Realm of Terrors.”

“The lore I have on
Darklings dates back to
the Elder People.”

“The Elder People
sought wisdom beyond
the Living World Realm.”
