Keeper of Lore

The Spinner's Writ: Myrtaro

Upon a gold and green hillock
beneath the dappled shade of an apple tree
reclined the gods and their daughter
enjoying the fruit and
watching rabbits at play

The father said, “This fruit is a delight
but I hunger for a more substantial treat.”

The mother said, “If there were a nourishing
drink at hand, I would be glad.”

Qayirw said, “I would prepare a feast
to celebrate my Queen and King,
and the world that they have created.
But I have nothing.”

The mother and father embraced
and their desire for such a feast
gave birth to another Child.

He sprang into being and declared,
“I am Myrtaroelnozinlimkwyisumybtagial,
Dazzling Array of Wine and Food Upon a Rich Board.”

With a flourish and a bow,
Myrtaro plucked an apple from the tree
and crushed it in his palm
letting the juice spill into the grass
from which a heavily laden table
burdened with fine settings and
bowls of dark wine grew.

Myrtaro gathered the playful rabbits
and ended their mirth in a moment
of terror whereupon they became
meat for the board.

Qayirw cried while witnessing
the first deaths in this land of glee
and perfection. She thanked the rabbits
for their sacrifice and asked whither
their spirits would go now.

The queen mother, the Weaver said,
“Animals are perfect. They live their lives
fully and with no waste.
They shall be woven into
the Tapestry of Heaven
and suffer never again.”

The gods thanked their new son
and fed on the meal he had prepared
and drank the wine on which they did not
become giddy.

The King and Queen spoke
to their Child of his new
domains of governance.
He has duties.

Myrtaro governs abundance,
livestock rearing and slaughter,
feasts, alcohol and indulgence.
