The Unfated Wanderers Canto 3
A crisp morning dawned, grim clouds routed by piercing blue sky. Billet and Vilerend departed Sprybull and retracing their steps, made for Shatterbone.
Meandering miles measured by brisk footfalls brought them once again to the Halfdead River. They found a safer route over the frozen river and crossed without worry. Resting on the riverbank revealed a distant vision of monstrous horror.
A giant was walking the distant line of the horizon. The being was ineffably enormous. It was as clearly discernible as the heroes were to each other, standing side by side.
They beheld a being whose body was that of a majestic horse. A smooth stalk protruded from where its head should have been. A leaking eyeball dangled from the atrocious appendage, witnessing the world around it. Long, leathery wings lazed below the clouds, gently beating back and forth. Horror hurried across the faces of the Wanderers as they watched the wings suddenly extend to their full reach. Vile orbs of mucus were excreted from folds of skin and plummeted to the ground. What became of the filth would later be discovered, but currently remained a hideous mystery.
Their spellbound gazes were broken by nausea needling their stomachs. Shatterbone dwelt in the path of the giant. Panic prodded them forward, eager to return home, fearing what wreckage would be wrought. The wanderers ran through the daylight and trundled through the night. The giant outpaced them and vanished from their sight beyond the edge of the horizon.
Early morning found Vilerend and Billet blundering into the village, weary legs wobbling, breath gathered in great gasps. Their worry was for naught. Shatterbone, their home, was spared.
The loot was delivered to Tong as was the tale of the giant. It must have turned away from the village. Luck or Fate were friendly this time. Indeed, no one had even sighted the monstrosity. But Tong, the curious, was ravenous for more information. He directed the wanderers to rest briefly and seek out the giant. Gather information. Learn as much about it as possible.
